Update

I added a bit to the FAQ's and corrected an error I spotted. This forum is still new to me so I'm still trying to figure out how to make moderators and stuff. I'd like to have pertinent links on the main forum page like I had at EzBoard but it doesn't seem possible. I think that might become possible if I pay for the forum. I might do that in the future. I believe the cost is the same as it was at EzBoard.

it would definitely be something to research, i think. those links were dang useful. even at Network54 we were poppin' those portals like candy (hehe). but if it came down to having to pay for the forum just to get links on the main page, then why not just have a links thread in the Welcome Mat forum? i'm sure there are other options that come with a paid forum, but again, something to research. my apologies, azzy, that i haven't had as much time to rifle through things as you have. things have been...chaotic, to say the least. i can't WAIT to move into the new apartment. i can settle down. and with winter coming? *happy sigh*

Yeah, you get more features with a paid forum but I haven't explored that yet.

Oh, there's no need to apologize. I really didn't think we'd get things up and running here until sometime after you got settled into your new place. Right now I'm only devoting a couple days a week to the forums (Mondays and Thursdays) . I'm trying to avoid getting as addicted as I once was. lmao!

Today, I think I'll spend more time tossing up a couple more profiles. Can never have enough of those, right? *giggles*

I have been considering, if you would be willing to help me with it and do not have it yet writing up just some generic racial information for a sampling of the races (much like we've already got for Neroumba) How much does it cost for a paid server, depending on how much and how it looks I might be willing to sponsor the site...it would only be for a month unfortunately, but it would get us started.

I took a look at the board features and setting user moderators should be possible even in a free board. As a matter of fact there are VERY few things that we do not have access to as a free board.

http://www.activeboard.com/feature_matrix.spark?sparkKey=8a030d6773c8509a784885924e041692b0

Also, here in the beginning we're not likely to get 10,000 hits or more/month unless I'm greatly underestimating the traffic that the site currently generates. The 10,000 hits/month price range is $4.95/month. So the question then becomes are the few differences that important to you as an administrator.

Hmm, we must be on the same wavelength because I checked all this out last night. lol

The pricing is very similar to EzBoard. At Ezboard I was in a rush to pay though because the "free" forum had several annoying popups plus an ad banner going across the top. I don't think they have pop ups here. At least I haven't been hit with any but then again my pop up blocker might be holding them off. Not sure. Does anyone else have annoying pop ups? The only thing I do see is the ad banner across the top and that's not so bad.

The only other good thing about paying is that you get to work with a header and footer that accepts html. So I could put anything, including links there. But I really don't see the need for that now. I think things are good enough as they are for the moment. aww

Hehe, Ravyn's like that. When she wants to see something succeed (and trust me, I live with her.... she REALLY wants to see Variance take off), she'll try to help in every way possible.

Same goes for me. If there's anything you need researched or done and you don't have the time, let us know if it's something we can help with.

once i'm actually making commission as a groomer, i can also sponsor our forum. that's if it's really important to have html headers and footers. right now, and maybe even in the forseeable future, i don't think that's necessary. we're just getting started.

now, if New Variance (hee!) gets as busy as the old boards, then it might --*might*-- be something to look into. especially if activeboard actually adds a few features for the paid accounts.

Well, I went ahead and paid for 3 months here at Active Board. Why? Because after reading over my last Lyla post I found out they had a stupid profanity filter on that could only be changed if the board was gold. (a paid forum) I ended up rewording the post, but then rushed off to pay for the board.

Initially, I had this line... She cocked her head, puzzlement showing in her eyes. ---It came out as ... She ****ed her head, puzzlement showing in her eyes.

Now that pissed me off enough to go and pay the damn fee so I could get that profanity filter off. A lot of my thuggish characters love to swear! LOL When I have more time, I'll explore what other features are available now.

Oh, as to the question about races. When I first brought my world to the net I went with all the races available in the dungeon and dragon game: elf, dwarf, ½ elf, human, gnome, halfling, ½ orc, and a race I invented called Rydan that is very similar to the psionics in D&D. I still consider human, elf, ½ elf, and dwarf to be the predominant races in the world of Variance.

Over the years, writers have brought in a number of races like dragons, vampires, gargoyles, and werecreatures. I used to think of these things as nothing but creatures that the main characters of the predominant races would go off to battle. But I've learned that such races can make excellent characters so I'm all for them!

In other words, any race is acceptable here in Variance, but some characters might not be too familiar with them since they aren't that common. Or they might think of them as evil at first. I mean if someone brings in something like a "kindly" zombie, my characters first reaction would probably be to kill it since he'd see it as a threat. So that zombie better do some fast talking. lol
